Prompt: How does watching the film version of Into the Wild change or deepen your understanding of Chris McCandless compared to reading the book? In your response, explain one key difference in how his character or experiences are presented, and connect this to a time when seeing something visually changed your understanding of a situation.

 Prompt Response: Compared to the book the film makes McCandless seem more friendly than the book portrays him, which makes it seem like McCandless was a much more compassionate person than what he was described as within the book. Summary: Watched the Into the Wild film. Reflection: I learned that films and books can have the same characters act in different ways. Knowing this will better help me compare the two as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: Chris and his sister Carine McCandless had a very close relationship, even when he struggled to connect with others. Write about a relationship in your life where you feel truly understood. Explain what makes that relationship strong and how it compares to the connection between Chris and Carine in Into the Wild.

 Prompt Response: The relationship in which I feel most understood is between my friends. The thing that makes this relationship so strong is because we all understand each other and can relate to each other being similar in age. I have a similar relationship that Chris and his Sister with my friends. Summary: Read chapter 13 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that close relationships can cause heavy mental strain on a person if someone dies. Knowing this will help me as I progress through my life.

 Prompt Response: Look at how your friendships or social groups have changed overtime.What tends to cause those shifts? Thinking back to how my friendships have shifted overtime I see that most causes of these shifts are because of me growing older and changing as a person and also because of changing interest. Summary: Read chapter 12 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that people constantly change as people throughout their lives. Knowing this will better help me understand people as I progress through my life.

 Prompt Response: The visual version of Chris's journey makes his choices seem more reckless than the text does. With the film we are shown an accurate representation of Chris's journey and it provides the viewer to form their own opinions based on what they see, while the book has the reader base their opinions off of what the author believes leaving less material for the reader to use to form their opinions. Summary: Watched the first 40 minutes of the Into the Wild movie. Reflection: I learned that movies are able to change a person's understanding of media. Knowing this will better help me understand differing view points as I progress through my life.

Prompt: Think about a moment when your understanding of your family changed as you got older. How did that shift impact your perspective, and how does that connect to Chris’s realization about his parents in Chapter 11?

 Prompt Response: When I was younger I used to think that my dad could do no wrong but as I've grown I realized that he wasn't the perfect person I thought he was. Going from believing that my dad was perfect to realizing that he isn't gave me a more realistic perspective of people. This connects to Chris's realization as it shows that many people go through similar perspective shifts as they grow older. Summary: Read chapter 11 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that people's perspectives of others change as they grow older. Knowing this will better help me understand people as I progress through life.

 Prompt Response: The chapter that stood out to me the most was chapter 4. This chapter was interesting to me as it shows how McCandless chooses to forgo his materialistic wealth by burning all of his money and leaving his car behind in a ditch. Summary: Completed test over Into the Wild chapters 1-10. Reflection: I learned that making a personal connection to the events of a story can increase your understanding of the story. Knowing this will help me as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: Chris McCandless rejects a traditional path of success and instead defines success on his own terms through freedom, experience, and personal meaning. Reflect on what success means to you at your current stage in life. In the response, explain how success is currently defined (grades, college acceptance, achievements, happiness, etc.) and where those ideas come from.  Prompt Response: To me, success means doing well in school. That means I must pass and graduate from high school. These ideas come from wanting to do well in the world after school. This definition was shaped by my family and society. Summary: Read chapters 9 and 10 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that finding topics of research within a book can give you a deeper understanding of the story. Knowing this will better increase my understanding of novels as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: Chris chooses independence over relationships. When have you chosen to be on your own instead of relying on others? What happened, and would you make the same choice again?

 Prompt Response: I choose to be alone a lot when I go to family gatherings. Usually people will split off into little groups doing their own thing and I choose to be by myself rather than putting myself in a situation where I am uncomfortable. I would make this same choice again. Summary: Read chapter 8 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that the word propriety refers to being socially acceptable in the way your dress or act. Knowing this will expand my vocabulary as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: Choose a vocabulary word from Lesson 10 that resonates with you personally. Write a blog post explaining why this word is significant to you, including any personal memories or experiences that link you to the word.

 Prompt Response: A word that resonates with me personally is the word Luminous. This word is significant to me because I used to love astrology when I was younger and I read a lot of books where stars and constellations were described using the word.  Summary: Completed lesson 10 vocabulary. Reflection: I learned that the word Luminous means bright. Knowing this will help me expand my vocabulary as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: For most of you, yesterday you took the SAT. If you did not, you will take it before you leave high school. What is your desired SAT score? Identify your top three colleges and explain why each school appeals to you.

 Prompt Response: My desired SAT score is at least a 1300. My top 3 colleges are Tuskegee because of it HBCU status, Georgia state because of its convince of location, and Florida State because I would be able to see my father more often since he works in construction in Florida. Summary: Read chapter 7 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that drawing images of a quote in a story helps you better visualize the quote. Knowing this will better help me as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: Twice a year we adjust our clocks for daylight saving time, but the change can affect our sleep, energy, and daily routines. Now that we have sprung forward; reflect on how this time change impacts you personally. Do you find it easy or difficult to adjust your schedule? Explain how the time change affects your mood, productivity, or daily habits.

 Prompt Response: The time change that we experience every year never really affects me to much. It doesn't impact my mood, my productivity, or my daily habits. There are some times when the time changes do negatively affect me for example I don't get enough sleep but those times are usually few and far between. Summary: Read chapter 6 of Into the Wild. Reflection: I learned that creating a chart about what you read and keeping track of questions helps you better understand what you read. Knowing this will better help me as I progress throughout my academic career.

Prompt: In Chapter 5 of Into the Wild, McCandless is strongly influenced by writers like Jack London, whose stories shape the way he thinks about adventure and wilderness. Has a book, song, musician, or artist ever influenced the way you think about life, goals, or the world around you?  Prompt Response: In my personal experience I have not been to heavily influenced by a book, song, musician, or artist but rather I've been heavily influenced by my family. Growing and living with them has changed the way that I view the world as a whole as my view has been shaped by my experiences. Summary: Read chapter 5 of Into the Wild and answered discussion questions. Reflection: I learned people are influenced by the media they view. Knowing this will better help me understand people as I progress through my academic career.

Prompt: In Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless gives up many of his possessions in pursuit of freedom and meaningful experiences. If you had to simplify your life and keep only a few important possessions, what would you keep and why? What would be hardest to leave behind?

 Prompt Response: If I had to simplify my life and keep only a few important possessions I would keep my Money, ID and some of my clothes. I would keep these because they would be important for me to live my life. The hardest thing for me to leave behind would be my phone as it holds a lot of my favorite memories. Summary: Read chapters 2 & 3 of into the wild. Reflection: I learned people forge new identities for themselves when they want to change their lives. Knowing this will help me if I ever wish to leave behind my old life.

Prompt: People sometimes feel the need to step away from their normal routines or environments in order to better understand themselves. Describe a time when you needed distance from a situation, place, or group of people in order to think more clearly or gain perspective. What did that experience teach you about yourself?

 Prompt Response: When my family has a large gathering like a cookout or meet together during a holiday, I usually need to go and take a minute in a more quiet area so I can get away from the large amount of noise for awhile. This experience taught me that I don't really like being in very loud area's. Summary: Read chapter 1 of into the wild. Reflection: I learned that people leave things behind to gain a new perspective on life. Knowing this will better help me understand people as I progress throughout my life.

Prompt: After reading Chapter 1 of Into the Wild, consider your first impression of Christopher McCandless. Based solely on the events and details presented in this opening chapter, do you believe McCandless truly understood the risks he was taking when he entered the Alaskan wilderness? Why or why not?

 Prompt Response: My first impression of McCandless is that he is a foolish person. Based solely on the events of the opening chapter I do not think McCandless understood what he was doing. I think this because he was under prepared to face the conditions of the environment he was going into. Summary: Viewed the introduction to the book Into The Wild. Reflection: I learned that you cannot outrun a bear. Knowing this will help me if I ever get into a situation like this.

Prompt: Today you worked on creating your Vocabulary Digital Cards in Adobe Express. In one well-developed paragraph, reflect on the assignment by explaining which vocabulary word was easiest for you to understand, which word was most challenging, and how creating your own sentence and selecting an image helped strengthen your understanding of the vocabulary. Use specific examples from your work.

 Prompt Response: Of the vocabulary words we learned today, the one I found easiest to understand was bumpkin. This was the easiest one to understand because I hear people use the word often. The hardest word for me to understand was toady. This word was hardest for me to understand because it was a word I have not heard before. Creating sentences, the sentence I created for the word toady was "Caleb is a toady person towards people in power." I also used a person bowing to a king for my image to help me remember the meaning of the word. Summary: Completed Vocabulary Poster on Adobe Express. Reflection: I learned that the word toady means a person who flatters; sycophant. Knowing this will better increase my vocabulary as I progress throughout my academic career.
